What does it take for a forest fire to start? Grades 3 to 5 students across New Brunswick are about to find out, and then build it.

This challenge will kick off with a live event on May 25 at 9 AM where students will explore the science behind wildfire conditions in our province, from temperature and wind to forest density and drought, and learn how to navigate MakeCode Arcade. Afterwards, students will have until Friday (May 29) to code their own fire spread simulation using MakeCode Arcade. The challenge blends environmental science with computational thinking, asking students to make design decisions grounded in what they’ve actually learned.

The winning classroom will receive a class set of Kitronik ARCADE handheld gaming consoles, purpose-built for MakeCode Arcade. Each device features a LCD screen and a game controller layout that brings student-coded projects to life beyond the browser.

Whether students are just starting to explore coding or are already block-programming veterans, this challenge is designed to meet them where they are and push their thinking a little further.
