Journey Through Carington House is a serious game designed to familiarize the nursing home environment and combat negative stereotypes and misconceptions about nursing homes. It was developed as part of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Home’s Recruitment Strategy to engage a youth audience to consider careers in nursing homes.

Serious games are games with a purpose other than pure entertainment and are often used in education, health care and business.

What you’ll need

  • Journey Through Carington House Teacher Resource Kit (Available in English and French)
  • Computer with projector
  • Individual IPADS or devices for students
  • Plain paper, Markers, Pencil Crayons

Instructions

  • Review the Journey Through Carrington House Resource Kit (Available in French and English) which includes information about New Brunswick Nursing Homes, Video Game Research and student testimonials.
  • Review YouTube Video Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSrm1OmQMio
  • Review Video Game You Tube video instructions  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSrm1OmQMio 
  • Complete the short Ice Breaker game and pre-activity questions with the students.
  • Play the game!
  • In the game, students will complete missions that highlight real-life situations in nursing homes.
  • Complete the post-activity questions and discussion with the students. Explore Extension #1 and ask students to complete the “Family Fun” activity with their families.
  • Explore Extension #2 and complete the Problem-Based Learning activity included in the resource Kit.
