COE Health and NBCC are excited to celebrate Nurses Week, 2025!!
Join NBCC staff and the Centre of Excellence for Health for an engaging and informative session as we explore the pathways to becoming a Practical Nurse (PN) or Personal Support Worker (PSW).
This session will include an overview of both programs, admission requirements, and valuable insights into these rewarding career opportunities in nursing. There will also be time for students to ask questions and connect with professionals in the field.

Practical Nurses (PN) and Personal Support Workers (PSW) work around the clock, 365 days a year. They are vital to the stability and function of our health care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, special care homes, hospices, and private homes. Their roles are in trauma care, intensive care and maintenance care of the ill and unstable both in hospital and at home. With growing demands and increased skills, these primary care workers are an essential profession that provides consistent care for the people of their communities.
These health care professionals, designated Personal Support workers, provide personal care, accurate basic assessments, and subsequent interventions as directed by the physician. They can perform a variety of skills, including taking vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and glucometer, basic dressings, and simple assessments. In addition to these skills, Practical Nurses can do more complex assessments, complex dressings, phlebotomy, IV insertion and maintenance, catheter insertion, and many other essential equipment in caring for the people entrusted to them.
As part of a robust collaborative health care team, PNs and PSWs provide an essential service to maintaining and caring for the people of New Brunswick. Their dedication and vocation to the health of New Brunswickers are fundamental to restoring a stable health care system in New Brunswick.
