Overview
The Centre of Excellence for Skilled Trades and Manufacturing in partnership with Atlantic Masonry Institute is excited to bring you the experiential learning activity called “Sugar Shack: A Masonry Experience”.
In this hands-on building challenge, French Immersion Middle School Learners will explore several techniques and develop vocabulary needed in this iconic skilled trade. Learners will build sugar shacks with “bricks and mortar”, exploring the skills and craftsmanship masons implement in their everyday work.

Kit Materials
Kit materials provided will include the following:
- 12 boxes of 500g sugar cubes (2/3 box per group)
- 1 bag of 500g icing sugar (divided into 4-5 tumblers for mixing mortar)
- 4-5 tumblers (or other container for portioning icing sugar)
- 1 pkg. of 40 dixie cups (2-3 per group)
- 1 pkg. of 50 mini wooden Popsicle sticks (3-4 per group)
- 1 pkg. of 100 large wooden Popsicle sticks (6-7 per group)
- 1 pkg. of 15 plastic or birch measuring teaspoons (1 per group)
- cardstock building mat printable (1 per group)

These materials are for a class size of 28 with small groups of 2-3 students.
School to provide the following materials for the event:
- Water (access to sink or container for mixing mortar)

Deadline for registrations is Monday, January 27th at 9:00 am. Deadline may close sooner depending upon popularity of event.
Note 1: Kits are limited. Materials will be distributed to 20 classes who register, with equitable distribution across schools and districts.
Note 2: Registration does not guarantee a materials kit. The activity lead will review all registrations and reach out to all with further details. Successful registrants will receive a confirmation of acceptance email with the link to the event. Unsuccessful registrants will also receive an email.
Note 3: Please complete a separate form for each event and/or class you wish to register. LIVE events are limited to one class per completed registration. Entire school or grade level registrations for LIVE events will be restricted.
Note 4: Preference selection for first time educators or schools will be considered for repeat events.
